BELONGING IS BUILT THROUGH PARTICIPATION
Moving to Mexico can change your surroundings immediately, but feeling at home generally takes longer.
The transition may include:
Excitement
Relief
Loneliness
Homesickness
Frustration
Comparison
Loss of identity
Curiosity
New confidence
A gradually growing sense of belonging
These experiences do not necessarily happen in a particular order.
Feeling uncomfortable does not automatically mean the move was a mistake. Feeling excited does not guarantee that a location will work long term.
Community is most often built through:
Repetition
Shared interests
Language
Reciprocity
Reliability
Curiosity
Time
Online groups can open the door, but showing up is what begins to create belonging.

FIND 3 DOORS INTO COMMUNITY
Choose one possible Mexican location. Find one opportunity in each of these categories:
1. A Familiar Door
Look for a Canadian, international, newcomer or English-speaking group.
Search:
“Canadians in [location]”
“Expats in [location]”
“Newcomers in [location]”
2. An Interest-Based Door
Choose something you genuinely enjoy or want to learn.
Search:
“[Your interest] in [location]”
Examples:
Yoga
Hiking
Art
Cooking
Gardening
Dancing
Photography
Business networking
Spiritual community
Volunteering
Try the search in both English and Spanish.
3. A Local or Language Door
Search:
“intercambio de idiomas en [location]”
“clases de español en [location]”
“eventos culturales en [location]”
“voluntariado en [location]”
Look for something that meets regularly rather than a one-time event.
Your job is not to join everything.
Your job is to see whether there are realistic places where connection could begin.

CREATE YOUR FIRST-MONTH COMMUNITY PLAN
Today, you’ll identify a few ways to begin participating in your possible community.
This is not a promise to become instantly social.
It is a plan to avoid waiting at home for belonging to find you.

DAY 14 — MY COMMUNITY AND BELONGING PLAN
The location I’m exploring is:
When I imagine having community in Mexico, I’m hoping for:
Close friendships / Social activities / Practical support / Professional connections / Spiritual community / Local involvement / Other
Find three possible doors into connection:
1. A familiar or newcomer connection:
2. A group, class or activity based on something I enjoy:
3. A local, volunteer, cultural or Spanish-language opportunity:
The one I would be most excited to try is:
One realistic way I could practise Spanish is:
If I experienced a lonely week, what would help me feel grounded and connected?
One way I could contribute to my new community—not only receive from it—is:
My first community-building step is:
OPTIONAL DEEPER QUESTION
If nobody in Mexico knew your career, your history, your accomplishments or the role you played in Canada, who would you want to become there?
What parts of yourself would you keep—and what might you finally have room to explore?
-
HELPFUL RESOURCES
Also explore:
Local Facebook groups
Municipal cultural calendars
Libraries and cultural centres
Language schools
Volunteer organizations
Community noticeboards
Yoga, fitness and art studios
Coworking spaces
Local cafés and markets
Faith or spiritual communities
A Note About Online Recommendations
An active Facebook group can be helpful, but it does not represent an entire community.
Posts may reflect the experiences, expectations and frustrations of a small group of people. Use online conversations to identify questions and opportunities—not as the final verdict on a location or its residents.

Day 14 is complete when you have:
Defined what community means to you
Found three possible doors into connection
Chosen one activity you could attend repeatedly
Identified how you would support yourself through loneliness or transition
Named one way you could contribute to your new community
You do not need to join every group or introduce yourself today.
Tomorrow, we’ll bring your research together and answer the question at the centre of this challenge:
Could I really move to Mexico—and what should I do next?
DAY 14
COMMUNITY + THE EMOTIONAL REALITY
